A quick letter to Mayor Wayne Brown
Please urgently condemn Maurice Williamson's vile behaviour
Dear Mayor Brown,
I'll be honest - my politics probably align more closely with Mayor Whanau's than yours. But here's the thing: I quite rate you. Your pragmatism, your focus on getting things done rather than grandstanding - these are qualities I admire. I'd actually vote for you.
One thing I particularly respect is that, during your entire time in politics, I've never once heard you say anything about stripping away someone's basic human rights. That's my baseline test for character, and you pass it.
Which is why I'm writing to you tonight about Maurice Williamson. What he did - spreading vile, sexualized rumours about Mayor Whanau in a council meeting - goes beyond politics. It's about basic human decency and respect for women in leadership.
This isn't about left or right. It's about right and wrong. I believe you know the difference.
Please condemn Maurice Williamson's behaviour tonight. Urgently. Show Auckland that this kind of treatment of women leaders has no place in our council chambers.
With respect and hope,
Paul Thistoll
